Where the Tide Does the Work

Low tide leaves the sea floor bare beside a forested red-rock cliff on New Brunswick’s Fundy coast.

On the Bay of Fundy, the ocean keeps a very strict schedule.

Twice a day, billions of tonnes of water rush in. Twice a day, they drain away, leaving fishing boats stranded on the mud and gulls walking where waves had been.

Some of the highest tides on Earth live here. You can watch them move.

Park near the shore and set an alarm. Bring a thermos.

  • low tide: walk the sea floor
  • high tide: watch it return
  • in between: do absolutely nothing

Some places don’t need a plan. They have a tide table.

Watch the bay change before lunch.
