One Burner, Good Dinner

Fried eggs in a pan on a single-burner camp stove, with flatbreads and a carton of eggs beside it.

You don’t need a kitchen. You need one good pan.

The best campsite dinners are almost embarrassingly simple, and they all start the same way: something sizzling, a little oil, and nobody in a hurry.

Try this one:

  • sausages, sliced
  • potatoes, small and quartered
  • an onion, any onion
  • salt, pepper and a lid

Cook everything together on one burner, stirring now and then, until golden and a little crisp.

Hunger is the best seasoning, and the lake is a good second.

Eat it straight from the pan, with the door open and the light going soft. Wash up tomorrow, probably.
